Anger Management
Anger is a normal human emotion and typically shows up when we are feeling afraid, anxious, or sad. Sometimes, anger surfaces because we need to feel protected. Other times, anger may help us get something that we need - like interpersonal space or to feel a sense of control. When anger causes us to feel out of control, it can be problematic - especially if it causes us to behave in ways that harm ourselves or others. Uncontrolled anger can sometimes cause damage to our relationships to those we love, as well as cause a whole gamut of stress-related issues like insomnia, hypertension, and physical pain.
How to Manage Anger:
Relaxation Techniques like diaphragmatic breathing, visualizations, and progressive muscle relaxation can be highly effective at calming the nervous system and staying in control of your emotions.
Practicing Non-Violent Communication can help you understand more about what is bothering you, identifying what you might need in that moment, and making direct requests to help get your needs met.
Understanding what triggers your anger can help you avoid situations that might make you quick to anger.
Reframing your thoughts can help you identify negative thought patterns that may contribute to feeling angry and build a new, more helpful perspective.
